Understanding the Human Chakra System

Posted by On January - 1 - 2010

The study of the bodys chakra system is often referred to as Chakrology by its proponents, alternative medicine advocates and New Age theorists. The existence of our chakra system was first discovered by the Ancient Hindus more than four thousand years ago. They have used the model for healing and promoting and individuals well-being.

It is believed that the human bodys energy centers number in the thousands of which seven are considered of vital importance to our individual well being. The major energy points that comprise our chakra system are the energy centers that all together contribute to our spiritual, mental, and physical well being and essence as an individual person.

The active functions of the major chakras contribute individually to the totality of the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of our life. Each one of our seven energy centers with their own specific character is compatible to a unique feature of our being. They work in a continuous relationship with one another towards achieving balance in the human body and are not vying for ascendancy over another of the other chakra points.

Although there are various models of the human bodys chakra system they have one thing in common, all models depict an uncanny illustration of the human bodys endocrine system and how the various endocrine glands chemically signal and communicate to one another.

The common representation of our major chakras is a straight ascending line along the spinal column from the base to the top of the head. Modern representations go one step further and assign the primary colors of the color wheel to each of the seven major energy points for a better illustration and to depict particular energy representations as colors symbolize different energy levels as well.

Although the energy points of our chakra system can not be seen, they are considered as extensions or invisible gateways to the endocrine glands that they correspond to. A chakric malfunction whether benign or not, directly affects our endocrinal system and therefore our body. Since they are the gateways of energy to and from our body, any blockages can result in our illness as well and an imbalance of our health.

Our bodys energy centers play a very important role in our well being ” both physically and spiritually.

An integral approach to taking care of our body is necessary in order to achieve total wellness. Considering that the nature of our chakra centers is a continuous interaction between themselves, the environment and our body, it can not be dissociated from the physical being simply because it can not be seen. Although this is the case, the physical manifestations of malfunction is very clear and concrete as each one of our energy centers affect certain parts of our physical and spiritual being.

Five of the seven major chakras in our body are assumed to have both a dominant and less dominant. Generally, the dominant side is considered to be the one facing the front while the less dominant side is the one facing backwards. The two major chakras that do not have this characteristic are the first chakra (at the base of the spinal column) and the seventh chakra (the crown of the head.

While energy is transmitted through the various energy points of our chakra system, extra energy is more commonly channeled through the first and seventh chakras. This is why an understanding and awareness of how they work and their benefit to our well being is necessary so that with practice, we can send and receive energy through all our energy points equally.
