Social Networking has become a major part of our web experience these days. Those are big websites where you can meet new friends besides keeping in touch with them and sharing photos, blogs, messages and a lot more. Social Networking websites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter dominate the lives of many Internet users today. Millions of PC users are part of those social networks and each day, more and more people are joining them. A consequence is that all those social networks are good target for hackers looking to steal your personal infos, to spread viruses and worms and to do anything to compromise people’s computers. The security system of those sites are indeed trusted by most people thus those sites are targeted by hackers.

If you’re a member of such a social network, you should take important steps to protect your computer (and yourself) from suspicious activities that might happen on those sites. Short of generic principles applying to those products, it is known that commercial antivirus solution can scan/monitor for viruses while the PC is being used by the user. This is an advantage for many people.

Others methods than the ones we just talked about are needed because social websites can be a dangerous place for many people so we will talk about manual methods to use. This can be done by following the guidelines stated below:

·    Carefully consider what information you are publishing online– Do not publish anything (like videos, pictures, or personal infos) that can be used against you after while. Do not publish photos or videos that might damage your reputation in any way.

·    Be prudent about all your new online friends– You should make friends (online, on those social networks) with the same people you would like to be friends on a daily basis outside the Internet. Shun from adding friends just to have a lots of them. Some of those new friends might indeed be some cyber criminals, or online stalkers. Those people should not be part of your online friends lists.

·    Do not let anyone see your personal information– You should be aware some options on those networks do allow friends of your friends to see your infos, unless you block them from being able to. So, set your profile to be only visible by your friends, not by anyone else.

·    Never reply or even obey any instructions coming from unverified messages– Hackers will send messages having as attachments compromised applications. Those messages will look like that they are coming from the development team of the social network you’re using. Be careful if you are being told by such a message to install (after downloading) any application. Be aware that this is some kind of trick by cyber criminals to install on your PC some malware or related programs.
·    Never do online posts on your profile related to your vacations.  Otherwise your house and personal belonging are even more vulnerable to thieves.

If you do follow those steps when using any social network, you will get a better and safer online experience. Besides you will help stopping those hackers. This way, you will help others social networks users and the whole experience of everyone will be a great one.
