A National Epidemic?

Posted by On March - 8 - 2010

The New York based “Early Show” felt this was worthy of reporting, so it must be serious right! This epidemic is so bad that magazine articles are popping up, media groups are forming and celebrities are using TV to raise public awareness. The question is, is it an epidemic of choice, or a lifestyle change brought on by today’s economic times.

In recent years this National Epidemic has crept from our Homes to Schools, Malls, Theaters and our Place of Employment. Picking up speed until it has made it’s way to a popular up scale event, the Opera.

Alliances have formed against it, on social media sites, magazine articles feature it, Jerry Seinfeld did an episode about it and now it’s on CBS. What is driving it? Is This A Choice? or A Lifestyle Change. Has the economy pushed people so far down that they just don’t care anymore.

The “Early Show” hit the streets of New York City to get the publics perspective on the cause of this epidemic. After sorting through the interviews it is apparent that this Epidemic has been created solely by Choice, the right we possess as American Citizens, not an economic infliction on our Lifestyle.

Okay, it’s time to unveil the National Epidemic that has consumed this great nation therefore, creating the media frenzy! You may be shocked to know that you are a contributing factor. The question is do you care? I assure you others do! This horrible Epidemic that has taken the nation by storm is “Sweatpants”. Oh yeah, believe it or not people are rockin’ their Sweatpants outside of their home and the gym. This behavior is frowned upon and can’t be accepted by all of society so it’s has been labeled an Epidemic.

If you missed this “Early Show”, you can go to their website and view the story in the archive files. I believe it also shows the picture of the Marie Claire’s model wearing Sweatpants and High Heels. Yep, you read it right! She is rockin’ High Heels with her Sweatpants. Why you ask, because Roberts Rassi of Marie Claire’s, in his interview, said When wearing Sweatpants “You should always dress them up. Always, always wear a heel. Always wear something tailored, a sharp shirt, a blazer or something with a sparkle.” If you think about this, you can see how by following this advice, which you know people will do. The fashion industry has taken this Epidemic, I use the word loosely, and created today’s Hottest New Fashion Trend. What a great marketing strategy.

The fashion industry can’t fight it and doesn’t make much money off of it. So they set out to market a “New and Improved” look to an old favorite with accessories and heels. This commonly used concept has been seen in household product commercials for decades. Being a marketer myself I find the Epidemic strategy to be pretty savvy.

Well, I Love Sweatpants And I’m Not Afraid To Wear Them, when appropriate. I wear them to work because I work from home therefore, I can! As for Roberts Rassi’s fashion advice. I can truthfully say if I need to wear heels and something with a sparkle it will NOT be with my Sweats!!! EVER. If you would like to learn marketing and wear your sweatpants to work without heels or a tailored blazer, then check out my comfort zone.

Always Comfy,
